We are looking for highly qualified and motivated doctoral students (PhD thesis work) to join our research groups at the Faculty of Business and Built Environment. We have positions open for four years and for two years. The decision on the number of positions in each category will be made after the application period. You can apply in three strategic themes of the Faculty of Business and Built Environment. We are also open to your own ideas that fall into the research theme for which you are applying. 

1) Architecture and Civil Engineering 

We are looking for highly qualified and motivated doctoral students (PhD thesis work) to join our research groups at the Faculty of Business and Built Environment. We have positions open for four years and for two years. The decision on the number of positions in each category will be made after the application period. You can apply in three strategic themes of the Faculty of Business and Built Environment. We are also open to your own ideas that fall into the research theme for which you are applying. 1. Architecture and Civil Engineering Our research interests in Architecture and Civil Engineering are related to the phenomenon of sustainable built environment. We search for answers to questions such as what key knowledge and innovations can best serve society to build, operate and maintain a safe, user-oriented and sustainable built environment, and how to integrate politics, planning, industry and citizens together to maintain sustainable built environments. 

Examples of topical areas at Civil Engineering and Architecture: 

  • Structural engineering - Building physics and life-cycle engineering 
  • Geotechnical and infrastructure engineering 
  • Construction engineering and management 
  • Transportation engineering 

2) Industrial Engineering and Management 

Our research interests in Industrial Management are related to the phenomenon of sustainable technology-centric competitive advantage. Our interests lie in the management of industrial firms in a safe, sustainable, innovative and efficient way. We search for answers to questions such as how do organizations create and utilize resources in creating value efficiently and effectively, and what resources do organizations need in a technology-centric, dynamic industry to achieve sustained competitive advantage. 

Examples of topical areas at Industrial Management: 

  • Sustainable supply chains of value-adding operations
  • Service business in technology-based firms 
  • Competitive advantage in innovation ecosystems 
  • Integrating advanced financial analytics into managerial decision making 
  • Social network analysis in business decision making 

3) Information and Knowledge Management 

Our research interests in Information and Knowledge Management are on offering, utilizing and managing information and knowledge in organizations in order to improve their competitive advantage. We search answers to questions such as how information and/or knowledge is best used by different stakeholders, how it is offered, how it creates value, how it can be improved, and why different challenges and obstacles emerge. In particular we are interested in value creation mechanisms, such as information technologies, data assets, data analytics, work systems, and different types of networks. 

Examples of research topics at Information and Knowledge Management 

  • Knowledge-based value creation 
  • Knowledge work and work systems
  • Safety and risk information in organizations
  • Knowledge networks
  • Information systems management and use 

Requirements

The successful candidate needs to have a Master's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Industrial Management, Information and Knowledge Management or in a related discipline completed by 31 December 2017, and have demonstrated (during studies towards the higher university degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue doctoral studies. 

For a two-year position the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate advancement in doctoral studies and capability to complete a doctoral degree during the two-year period.

The selected candidates must either already be or enroll as a doctoral student at doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Business and Built Environment.

Salary

The salary will be based both on the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral student is placed on the job demand levels 1-4. In addition, employees receive performance-based salary. The starting salary for doctoral students on the University's payroll is of the order of 2300€/month. 

Trial Period

Trial period of 4 months applies for all new employees

Other

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period for four or two years from 1 January 2018 onwards or as soon afterwards as possible. During this time, doctoral students will undertake full-time study towards a doctoral degree and they are included also to teaching duties in their own fields as part of their doctoral education. All doctoral students are integrated to different research groups in the faculty.
