Job description

We are looking for highly qualified and motivated researchers as new members for our research groups at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. At this time, our Faculty is looking for six Doctoral Students (PhD thesis work). The Faculty of Engineering Sciences is strongly contributing to the ongoing societal changes by enabling the success of industry through our efficient research and result dissemination activities. Long-term vision, strong interdisciplinary nature of the research, and industry-relevant research topics are cornerstones for the deep partnerships with a large number of companies globally. Through rigorous research within your field, you have the opportunity to participate in these changes and at the same time build your future career at the highest national and international level. We are inviting you to be a part of vibrant, active and truly international research community. At TUT, Interdisciplinarity is highly encouraged. You can apply in three strategic themes of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. We are open to your own ideas as well, that are supplementing each of the research themes. 

1) Engineering Materials Science 

The importance of materials science and engineering has significantly increased as a result of rapid technological development. Modern materials engineering deals with scientific and engineering problems in a wide range of disciplines and studies material properties and behavior from the nanoscale up to macroscopic structures. Materials technology is applied in all industrial branches such as mechanical engineering, metal and energy industry, medical industry as well as nanotechnology. Natural sciences such as physics and chemistry form a fundamental basis for the studies of material structures and behavior, while the engineering sciences deal more with the ultimate performance of materials. Engineering materials science is solving fundamental industrial problems with scientific methods in the research domain with huge industrial, societal and environment impacts and it creates new interdisciplinary innovations. Three research areas under this theme are: 1.1 Materials Research (Fundamentals), 1.2 Advanced Materials Processing and 1.3 Materials performance. 

Examples of research topics at Engineering Materials Science: 

  • Utilization of electron microscopy in advanced material development 
  • Mechanical behavior on advanced engineering materials
  • Functional ceramics surfaces by 3D printing
  • Thermally and kinetically sprayed protective coatings
  • Roll-to-roll intelligent food packaging materials
  • Non-conventional heat treatment of sheet metals
  • Ageing of polymer hybrid materials
  • Adaptive composites
  • Modeling of tribological phenomena in machine elements
  • Wear phenomena in arctic mining 

2) Mechanical Engineering Science 

Mechanical Engineering is widely recognized and continuously developing discipline, which is responding the present and future challenges in industry and society. In Mechanical Engineering our main focus is to develop knowledge and understanding for intelligent machines and manufacturing systems. The application areas are for example in mobile working machines, mining, wind energy, diesel engines, production machines etc. We conduct high level scientific research for machine systems in whole product chain from design to use phase and reuse. Mechanical Engineering is utilizing modern digital tools in design, analysis, manufacturing and life-cycle management and creating also new ones. We strongly cooperate in research with industrial companies. Three research areas under the theme are: 2.1 Design and development, 2.2 Manufacturing and automation and 2.3 Life-cycle management. The intersectional research area is Engineering intelligence. 

Examples of research topics at Mechanical Engineering: 

  •  Aircraft systems
  • Advanced mechatronic systems
  • Additive manufacturing of metal and ceramic materials
  • Collaborative robotics
  • Preventive maintenance
  • System integrity management
  • Reliability and availability of machine systems
  • Underwater robotics
  • Industrial internet
  • Product development processes 

3) Automation and hydraulic engineering 

Automation plays a key role in future machines and systems. The sliding autonomy is under research and it will be part of everyday life in future. Today Finland is one of the key players in e.g. Autonomous ships. We are able to see robotic solutions in different types of cases. In heavy machinery like forest and mining machines the manipulation arms are high technology robots. The green values are important and encourage to study and create emission free and energy efficient solutions. Three research areas under the theme are: 3.1 Automation and Systems Theory, 3.2 Innovative Hydraulic Automation and 3.3 Robotics and Automation.

  • Autonomy
  • Energy and eco-efficiency
  • Intelligent machines and systems
  • AI in heavy machinery
  • Data analytics
  • Situational awareness 

Requirements

The call for 4 years position is open to applicants who fulfill following criteria:

  • The successful candidates must be eligible for studies leading to a scientific or artistic doctoral degree as set forth in the Universities Act (558/2009 37§). The prerequisite degree must be completed by 31 December 2017. 
  • The candidate must have demonstrated, during his or her studies towards the higher university degree or otherwise, the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies in the field and complete a doctoral degree.

Salary

The salary will be based both on the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral student is placed on the job demand levels 1-4. In addition, employees receive performance-based salary. The starting salary for doctoral students on the University's payroll is approximately €2,300 per month.

Trial Period

Trial period of 4 months applies for all new employees

Other

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period for four years from 1 January 2018 onwards or as soon afterwards as possible. During this time, Doctoral students will undertake full-time study towards a doctoral degree and they participate also in teaching duties in their own fields as part of their doctoral education. All Doctoral Students are integrated to different research groups in the faculty.
