In cooperation with the Laboratories of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Systems, Pervasive Computing, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Signal Processing the Laboratory Mathematics is seeking for 1-2 part-time research assistants to support in designing and implementing a CubeSat space mission to a near-Earth asteroid. The CubeSat will be equipped with a radar, which needs to be designed and built. The work will be a part of the Academy of Finland Key Project Low and High Frequency Inverse Imaging. We are looking for Master’s Degree students with knowledge in the following fields (one or more):
An M. Sc. degree (or equivalent) in mathematics is required to be complete, or to be completed soon (e.g. thesis is ready). The position requires a good study background in analysis, especially linear functional analysis(on the introductory level), differential equations, and complex analysis. Knowledge in partial differential equations, numerical methods, and Matlab are considered to be a bonus. The position requires good command of English (written and spoken).
The possible tasks will be one the following:
The goal is to design and build a hardware and data processing interface for the radar. The Laboratory of Mathematics, Tampere University of Technology, will be the host institute of the project. The working period will include a secondment hosted by Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Göttingen, Germany, or other project collaborator for extended period of time (3 months at the most). The project will also be supported by the Laboratory of Pervasive Computing, TUT, and other project collaborators. Suitable persons to supervise the thesis work will be decided later.
The position is especially suitable for candidates interested in space technology and planetary science. The candidates should be close to graduation and able to prepare a Master’s Thesis at the Tampere University of Technology based on the work. Nevertheless storng candicates outside Tampere University of Tehcnology can be considered as well. The applicants should have completed studies in a field relevant to the research area, e.g., embedded systems hardware design and programming, electrical engineering or signal processing. In addition, experience in scientific computing and Matlab is an advantage, but it is not required. Good English language skills (oral and written) are essential. Ability to work, cooperate and communicate in a multicultural team and to interact with research partners is important.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to other than teaching and research staff, the position of Reserach Assistan is placed on the job demands level 1 (a percentage of the full salary agreed with the employee) (a percentage of the full salary agreed with the employee). In addition, employees receive performance based salary according to their study credits.
